Desmond Fitzgerald, Knight at Glin Castle, has been associated with North Kerry and West Limerick since the 14th century. Over the last three decades he has assembled a collection of views of Ireland, ranging in date from the mid-eighteenth century to today. In ‘Painting Ireland’ some two hundred of these are catalogued and discussed in close readings, offering an interdisciplinary approach to the material and crossing boundaries of art, architectural, social and local history. While there is a particular focus on depictions of the great houses of Ireland, there are also images of castles, townscapes, gardens and garden buildings, archaeological remains and interiors. |
